A princess. A vet. A gymnast. An air hostess. The editor of Vogue magazine. My career plans have varied wildly since I was very young.
My dad worked for Peugeot. At work he was ‘the boss’. We always had a Peugeot and sometimes we got to drive around in the new models with him, just after they had been released. I didn’t really know what my mum did other than she was ‘a business woman’ and also ‘the boss’. People were always trying to categorise me and my younger sister. She was ‘the creative one’; I was ‘the academic one’. Lots of grown- ups seem to feel the need to put labels on children, and I think it can make you slip into roles and personalities that you don’t actually fit. My sister and I are actually about the same in academia and creativity.
Now, all four of us are in working situations where we’re ‘the boss’. Always being surrounded by very strong-willed and successful people at home gave me a taste of what I’d like to do when I grew up, although I didn’t know it at the time.
